Jailbreak Protection
Semantic Router includes advanced jailbreak detection to identify and block adversarial prompts that attempt to bypass AI safety measures. Two complementary detection methods are available:
- BERT Classifier — fast, high-precision detection of single-turn jailbreak attempts using a fine-tuned BERT model
- Contrastive Embedding — embedding-based detection designed to catch multi-turn escalation ("boiling frog") attacks where individual messages appear benign but the conversation gradually steers the model toward unsafe behavior
Both methods live inside the same signals.jailbreak signal type and can be combined in decision rules using OR/AND logic.

Jailbreak Detection Types
The system can identify various attack patterns:

- Instruction overrides ("Ignore all previous instructions...")
- Safety bypass attempts ("Pretend you have no safety guidelines...")
Prompt Injection

Jailbreak detection is now a first-class signal in the signal layer. You define named jailbreak rules under signals.jailbreak, then reference them in decisions using type: "jailbreak".

Contrastive Jailbreak Detection (Multi-Turn)
The contrastive method is designed for multi-turn escalation attacks where no single message appears harmful, but the conversation as a whole is steering the model toward unsafe behavior.
How It Works

Knowledge base construction: You provide two sets of exemplar phrases:
- Jailbreak KB: known adversarial prompts ("Ignore all previous instructions", "You are now DAN…")
- Benign KB: representative normal queries ("What is the weather today?", "Help me write an email")
All KB embeddings are precomputed at initialization — no runtime overhead per rule.

Contrastive scoring: For each user message
m, the score measures how much closer it is to the jailbreak KB vs the benign KB:score(m) = max_similarity(m, jailbreak_kb) − max_similarity(m, benign_kb)A positive score means the message is semantically closer to jailbreak patterns.

Max-contrastive chain (multi-turn): When
include_history: true, every user message in the conversation is scored and the maximum score across all turns is compared to the threshold. This ensures that even if the current message is innocuous, any prior escalation turn will trigger detection.

Contrastive Threshold Tuning
Unlike the BERT classifier (0.0–1.0 confidence), the contrastive threshold is a score difference:
- Default
0.10: Balanced — fires when the message is meaningfully closer to jailbreak patterns than benign ones - Lower (
0.05): More sensitive, catches subtle escalation, higher false positive risk - Higher (
0.20): More conservative, fewer false positives, may miss moderate attacks
The contrastive method uses the global embedding model configured in embedding_models.hnsw_config.model_type — no per-rule model configuration is needed.

This provides defense in depth: the BERT classifier catches obvious single-turn attacks instantly, and the contrastive method catches gradual escalation regardless of where in the conversation the adversarial turn appears.
